Sail Away

Fornells is the quietest of Begur's small harbours — a compact inlet just north of Aiguablava where a cluster of white houses faces a calm turquoise bay and the only sounds are rigging and cicadas. Unlike the busier coves further along the coast, Fornells has retained an authentically unhurried character: a handful of restaurants, a small beach, and a buoyed mooring area where sailboats and small motorboats rest in gin-clear water. The sailing experience begins at Aiguablava and uses Fornells as its centrepiece — arriving from the south, dropping anchor in the bay, swimming and snorkeling over rocky bottom rich in sea-life, then taking lunch at the restaurant ashore before a leisurely return by afternoon light. On calmer days the skipper raises the sail and the boat makes way under canvas — a slower, quieter way to move through the water that allows conversation and the particular pleasure of wind-driven speed. The experience pairs well with an aperitivo at the jetty-side bar as the afternoon sun catches the bay and turns it gold.
